Photography and Modernity in the Ottoman Empire 1840-1914
In 1891 the concession to operate the coal mines in the Zonguldak area on the Black Sea was given to the
French-financed Société Anonyme Ottomane d’Héraclée, or Ereğli Şirket-i Osmaniyesi. This album, prepared by the company, is a comprehensive record of Zonguldak—a typical industrial town, the company’s various facilities, construction and production processes, other mining resources in the region, and the infrastructure projects built for the transportation of materials. Photographs that focus on work offer scenes from the labor landscape.
